Buying Traffic For an Affiliate Website: Good or Bad?

Traffic and Pagerank seems to the most headache for any newbie bloggers who has just created a new blog. Most of newbie bloggers would like to get their articles not only indexed by search engines but also read and enjoyed by readers as much as possible. However, an affiliate website needs a strategic approach that drive as much targeted traffic with high conversion as possible.

Starting a new blog is easier than starting an affiliate website. The difference between normal blog and affiliate website comes from its objective. While the normal is a great place to share anything that the blog’s owner would like to convey, however, the affiliate website has to deal with many other things. It can not only be a source of information for readers but also a great place to generate money for the blog’s owner. This is a challenging target for all bloggers of any level. Therefore, many bloggers have thought of buying traffic for their affiliate website. Is that good or bad idea?

It is good idea but needs better targeting:

There are various places from where you can buy website traffic. You choose Google Adwords, Bidvertiser, AdBrite…or even buying private sales on any blog/website of your interest. The traffic from these networks can either be targeted or untargeted based on your criteria. However, not many of you can afford this way.

The most important thing when you start an affiliate website is how much it can benefit you compared to what you have invested in. If you are spending about $500/month for buying traffic from different advertising networks but the revenue is lower than your investment. Is that worth?

It is good idea to buy traffic to your affiliate website just in case you have better understanding of what type of traffic you need and what products you are promoting. You can not buy traffic for nothing. Targeted traffic is very important and you should think about it. My experience is that you should learn carefully about advertising networks that you would like to buy traffic for your affiliate wbsite. There are a lot of features that help you maximize your investment like location targeting, geographical targeting, language…you may not be aware of and placing your bid for untargeted traffic.

The advertisements design and the message in your adverts should be carefully selected to maximize your advertisement and get more sales and leads.

Here are some tips that you should think when buying traffic to your affiliate website:

  • Words in title of your adverts should go into upper case. That means your title will be more visible to your readers and they are likely click on your ads too.
  • The link should go directly to the page that the product is advertised on, not to the home page. You should not also use shortened link services to hide your long link as readers will think that you are cheating them.
  • Create one advert per item. If you are advertising for many products, so you should create each adverts for each product with title and description and link directly to that specific product.
  • Buy highly targeted keywords only. If you are selling or promoting a wordpress plugin, you should not choose general keyword as “wordpress plugin”. You should choose the targeted keyword that can describe your features of plugin like “membership plugin”

It is also a bad idea that you should avoid:

As I mentioned earlier, it is a good idea but it can also be bad idea for those who are not familiar with advertising networks or simply want to get as much traffic as possible. You can not expect 1000 unique visitors that can convert into 100 sales. That is totally wrong as it can convert nothing at all.

Many bloggers are now selling cheap advertising services out there but no one knows whether these services are reliable and worth investing or not. You can increase your ranking but you can not guarantee your higher revenue.

I have received a lot of emails (most of them are scams or unreliable) saying that they could generate 1000 unique visitors a day for only $25/month. This is really a scam to me. They will use botnet, popup or many other offensive advertising ways to generate as much traffic as possible to your website and most of them are not targeted. You should forget these services!

Placing banners on all websites is not a good idea too. Many bloggers are placing their web tools service on a website about environment. How can it work? No, it will never help you convert into sales.

That is my recommendation and some personal experiences about getting targeted traffic to your affiliate website.

Good luck
