Can You Earn Passive Income With a Blog?

There are many people who believe that if they set up a blog, they will become rich overnight. Let it be known right off the bat that this will not happen, and if you think it is, you are not in the right place. It is possible to make money off your blog, but you will need to be prepared and put in some work to make it happen.

One of the biggest things you need to keep in mind when starting a web based business is that your blog needs to receive traffic, which will come with good content. Your content does not always need to be award winning, but it should be relevant and good. Make sure that what your blog about it not all over the map; it should have some sort of common thread to the whole thing. You can blog about technology and all it encompasses, or about crafts and all the many types out there. But likely you wouldn’t combine the two unless you were talking about software that creates craft patterns. If people do not know what to expect when they visit your site, they likely will not return.

Not only do you need good, relevant information, but you need to post regularly. There is much debate as to what regularly is, with some saying every day, some day several times a day, and some say only a few times a week. You must decide what works best for you and the topic you are blogging on. Some topics have so much information that you need to post at least once a day, others topics do not need this.

If you are hoping to earn passive income through your blog, it is important that your content is timeless. This is where a craft blog may do better than a technology blog, as computers, smart phones and other technological things are constantly changing and evolving. What this does is get you traffic to your site, and then they are more likely to click on the links.

There are several methods that you can use on your blog to help you earn income. One such method is to sell advertising space. This is typically only a viable option if you have a large following, as people are much more careful with their advertising dollars these days. You can sell affiliate products such as ebooks, web hosting, membership sites and many other things which you will make you a portion of the fees in commission. You could create your own product, such as an ebook or a membership to something, which can generate income for quite a while, or you could brand your blog to something people recognize and trust to buy from.

One of the biggest problems with passive income is that it can be difficult to tell how much of your income is passive and how much is from active activities. Short of quitting your work for a significant amount of time, you likely will not be able to tell which posts or activities are bringing results. However, good tracking (another skill you might wish to learn) can help you answer this question.
